Farm Catskills has invited author and economist Michael Shuman to speak in Delhi (at the Legion Hall) on Saturday October 24th at 2pm, on the topic of “Building Living Local Economies”.

They would like to get feedback from as many locally owned businesses as possible prior to the event to help tailor Michael’s talk to the needs and interests of Delaware County.  There is a short online survey for business owners, available at:

From our farms to our Main Streets, locally owned small businesses are the foundation of our communities.  How can we do more to grow our local economy and encourage thriving local businesses?  Come to this event to learn more about what everyone, from local government leaders to banks, from business owners to consumers can do to be part of the movement to strengthen sustainable, vibrant communities in the Catskill region.

Michael Shuman is a dynamic speaker on local economy concepts. He is an economist, attorney, entrepreneur, and the author of several books including The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition and Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in the Global Age.

Shuman has been involved with a variety of projects related to small and locally owned business development and support, including: creating a small business venture capital fund in New Mexico; launching a community-owned company in Salisbury (MD) called Bay Friendly Chicken; organizing university-government-business collaborations in St. Lawrence County (NY) and in the Katahdin Region (ME) to study opportunities for import replacement; preparing a buy-local guide and coupon book for Annapolis (MD); and building the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE).

This event is organized by Farm Catskills, with funding support from the O’Connor Foundation and the Pure Catskills buy local campaign.

Rep. Scott Murphy visited the Delaware County Fair on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and was a guest of the fair’s board of directors at their annual luncheon. While there, he got a chance to speak with all those who were present, and is seen here chatting with Supervisors Tom Hynes (D-Roxbury) and Jim Eisel (R-Harpersfield).

DELAWARE COUNTY DEMOCRATS WELCOME
NY20 CANDIDATE SCOTT MURPHY

DELHI – The Delaware County Democratic Committee will host Scott Murphy, Democratic candidate for the 20th Congressional District of New York, at a pair of events on February 25 in Delhi.

Murphy will attend the regularly scheduled Committee meeting to take place that evening at 7 p.m. in SUNY Delhi’s Sanford Hall, Room 22. Murphy will discuss his candidacy and his take on the issues, and will answer questions from Committee members, members of the public and the media.

Earlier in the day, Murphy will formally open his Delaware County campaign office at 98 Main Street (Schimmerling Law Offices) with a ribbon cutting ceremony and Meet & Greet event. The time for the ribbon cutting has yet to be determined but will be announced on this web site.

Scott Murphy is a Glen Falls business man who, as a managing director of venture firm Advantage Capital, made investments in promising companies in connection with federal, state and local economic development initiatives. Murphy says he is running for Congress to capitalize on his business experience to create and save jobs in upstate New York. As a successful entrepreneur, Murphy has helped to create over 1,000 jobs in New York State.

Murphy is running to fill the seat vacated by Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed by Governor David Paterson to the Senate to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The special election is expected to be scheduled for March 31.

On Thursday, Scott Murphy, candidate for Congress in New York’s 20th District, will join supporters to officially launch his congressional campaign at his new headquarters at 3 Warren Street in Glens Falls.

At the event, Scott will highlight why he is running for Congress and his vision to capitalize on his business experience to create and save jobs in Upstate New York. As a successful entrepreneur, Murphy has helped to create over 1,000 jobs in New York.

DCDC Inauguration Gala was a rousing success!

The DCDC gathering was a packed house, with over 75 attendees. Music by Jesse and the Compensators and a rousing speech by Gary the Plumber rounded out the evening with MC Cynthia Lockrow, Chair. A wonderful time was had by all!
